Progress, help and assistance

Hey all!

How are we?

I'd just like to see what point you're all up to, if anyone needs any assistance or things answering for their inquiry, and any ideas that you have for the professional artefact. Have we thought about how were going to present it?

Just a little on my topic:

I am a dancer onboard Carnival cruse lines, I'm very interested in finding out a universal opinion on producing the best performance. This is to help myself and my cast onboard the cruise ship, and anyone else interested on bettering their own performance. I want to produce the best shows we can so that the audience receives a fantastic experience and so that we ourselves develop and become the best we can be.

I've already started getting together my research, I'm asking passengers sailing what they think makes a great show, why they come to a show, what the best part of a show is.

I'm also putting together a focus group that involves very cast member and my dance captain, to discuss opinions on who they admire as dancers, what they think produces the best shows, what they push for in a show.

I'd like to open up the discussion to you guys also if you'd be willing to help, as a dancer, actor, musician, teacher, whatever field you're in, or your interests, I'd like to know what you think creates a great show.

Thank you in advance and I hope you'll be able to assist me, likewise I'm more than willing to help every one of you in any way I can.

  2. Hi Eve

I'm answering your question as a Dance Teacher. I'm currently coming to the end of the rehearsal process of putting on this years show (we go live this weekend) and for me the definitive answer is: Organisation and team work. Organisation of the choreography, of the administration, of the costume design, of the design team, of the stage team, of the sound and lighting team, of the dancers, of the FOH team. If everyone is organised, has set goals, liaises, and works with a structure and cohesion, then this together makes a great show.

In our studio we talk a lot about being a team. A show isn't 'put on' by the work of one person or group, and yet fails to succeed by the work of one person or group. Everyone has an input, and everyone feels valued.

If answering from the point of view of an audience member, it's the spectacle. And that come from all of the above functioning, hitting targets and coming together as one.

Something I noticed with my initial research was it's so important to use the correct wording for your questioning. In your explanatory paragraph you say you want to find the universal opinion on what makes the best 'performance', then later you use the term 'show'. To me these are not synonymous. This could be misleading in your questioning, meaning you don't actually get the answers to the questions you think you've asked. Do you think the term performance could be interpreted as 'personal performance'? As a dancer, in order to put on the best performance you would rehearse (often independently, even for a group piece), but in order to put on the best show you would liaise with the other parties, work cohesively and with understanding of the limitations put up others. Alternatively, you could use the word production?

    I hope this helps?

    Take care

    Megan

  4. Thank you very much for your responses, you're quite right Megan, thank you very much for your opinion. This is something I personally believe that for a show, the importance of teamwork is crucial, it's what makes it successful! Their are many differences of opinion, I've recently conducted a survey using the focus group technique with my cast, they've all answered very differently, and it seems very individually. Only one performer commented on the effect and importance of team work. Thank you also for your advice on the wording of my work, your very right and I hadn't seen this before, yet it makes perfect sense, I need to be clear and consistent with how I'm wording my work.

Thank you for your link- I'll be sure to take a look :)
