Re: Task 1a: Professional profile

Hi everyone

As I mentioned on one of my earlier posts about visiting the London Dance Programme; I highly recommend you all do so. I sent an email to them regarding feedback they could give me about my CV and they sent me a lovely email back, so helpful. They even attached two documents, both edited forms of my CV. Megan (who I actually have heard of as she's an ex pupil of Hammond my vocational college) was more than happy to help and encourage my professional journey! She was who answered my email.

In her email she mentioned to create your CV in a PDF form as this is more accessible, and to make sure the picture featured in my CV is a small jpeg.

Other pointers for enhancing my CV were as follows, these could apply to anyone:

  • It is not really necessary to include your home number, address, weight on your CV.
  • We end up sending our CV off to so many people so it is best to keep personal information as private as possible as you never know where it might end up. Mobile number and email is more than fine.
  • Weight - if they request it specifically then you may send it, but legally the employer is not required to know/ask for performers weight. Do you have a full length photo that you could also send with your CV?
  • Do you sing? Want to send off for musicals? Include your vocal range on your CV
  • Do you have any dance examinations? RAD ballet? ISTD modern?

Here is how Megan edited my CV, I now have to apply some small changes and add on a few bits to enhance it even more see it on my flickr:

Special thank you to Megan Preston, London Dance Programme.

Task 1d: 2d images

Greetings all :)

I've now created my Flickr account, this is a collection of my experience on my first cruise contract, random inspirations, my sister who has explored modelling a little, my brother who has a keen interest in photography, my American boyfriend who is a dancer and photographer, and costuming I love, design and a random favourite quote. Enjoy!

Please leave comments with hook ups to links you may want me to visit/explore.

Peace and love <3

Good vibrations?

Hey all

This morning I wanted to share with you a fantastic finding.. I recently posted a link to finding a dance agent via the London dance programme. Through researching a little bit more I discovered that two former student graduates of the Hammond (my dance college) are actually key founders and coordinators of the London dance programme!

They post blogs of meetings that take place in London, their fantastic! One that I read this morning really really made me smile. It's something I've been following myself quite recently, almost a practice to better and benefit my life.. I have found a positive way of thinking which has brought me what I believe; prosperity, health and well being. I feel so much better. I collect motivational quotes, findings, exerts. I have found others who follow and lead their lives in similar ways.

Getting back to my point, I discovered that I follow pretty much all pointers that are stated in the article, which made me smile and feel good. Check it out, I highly recommend looking at the website.

Enjoy :)

Getting a dance agent

Good morning all,

Found this on Facebook this morning for anyone seeking dance agents, this article is quite handy for identifying what an agent looks for, what's it about and asking yourself if an agent is for you. This is relevant to my own knowledge and understanding as I'm unsure whether to have an agent represent me, there are pros and cons to representation. Hopefully it will be helpful to all other artists on here.

Hope you enjoy!

Task 1b: Professional communications technologies

Reading through the Reader 1 was an utter journey and for me and personally, an eye opening experience. My understanding of what now has become the future generation of creators. Everyone using the Web 2.0 has gained a voice, an equality amongst internet users and providers.

To start with, I was clueless as to what Web 2.0 means, it sounds like something alien almost, but in fact the majority of us know exactly what it is! As it states in the reader "Web 2.0 refers to a second generation of web based communities. This includes social networking sites (like Facebook and Twitter)".  Straight away it clicked, how many of us use social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter? Even my younger cousin of 10 has Facebook! She therefore, is part of the 2.0 community!

I particularly paid attention to the line "Web 2.0 provides the opportunity for the reader and creator to interact and more importantly, for reader to become the creator". It drew my attention as I liked the use of the word creator, as the reader continues I began to understand the role of a Web 2.0 user, as quite correctly, we are creators!

The accessibility of Web 2.0 is so easy, as it states "anywhere in the world" and also "the interface is usually user friendly, simple to use and quick to load" indeed so, if anyone has a Internet provider, we can become these creators. We begin feel a sense of importance, and a role model like status almost, as it states in the reader "the users add content to the site, and the more the users access the site and add data the better the site becomes".

We need to embrace this new generation of technology, it drew my attention in O'reilly's article why some people decry it as a 'meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as new convention wisdom". This is true that we all need to ACCEPT this revolution. Again the understanding is that we have now moved on from the 90s notion that the web was about publishing, not participation, that advertisers, not consumers, ought to call the shots, that size mattered and that the Internet was increasingly being dominated by the top websites.

I could relate to a particular aspect of O'reilly's article, where he stated "the more popular the file, in fact, the faster it can be served, as there are more users providing bandwidth and fragments of the complete file'. The key Web 2.0 principle advocates "the service automatically gets better the more people use it". I can relate this to my own form of advertising, I now purposely use Facebook as a platform for advertising my own dance classes and inspirations. I constantly update my page with all aspects of dance and arts. I link to be stimulated and stimulate others, it's a whole sharing network amongst us. I post videos up, likewise I watch and comment on others. It works as almost a back and forward platform, continually updating others and improving all our experience and depth of knowledge. As the reader goes on to say "in Web 2.0, the user can collaborate, comment, critique, share and remix information and technological communications".

Another point raised in the reader is "when working on any public forum it would be good to consider your own professional reputation needs". I can relate this to dance and entertainment companies purposely looking at your pages to seek information about you as a person. This is vital to your career as a dancer, all your information you choose to be seen on the sites is committing yourself to accepting that the information can be accessed anywhere, from anyone. This fits in nicely with the ethical considerations. As it states in the reader, it's important to the "professionals" this is what we're becoming, we have to be cautious, committed and responsible for what, where and how were presenting ourselves and the content at which were exploiting.

Whether we have realised it or not yet, users of the Web 2.0 community are continually gaining knowledge, engaging responsibility and becoming professionals. This is central to our learning. It is now being used across many courses, more specific to higher education, and most valuable to it's students. It strikes me that Web 2.0 is such an advance in technology and such a genius revolution, that we are lucky to have these tools so accessible and important to our learning.

And so it starts..

Ok, so unsure as to whether this will successfully post, be even visible etc etc.

BUT its a start :).

Welcome! You've found my blog, probably not the most interesting, comments are a MUST, please help this poor girl. Yes this is what you might call a plea for assistance.

As you can see, I'm a late starter, just managed to actually enrol and figure the course out. Sounds exciting, interesting and I'm sure as you get further into blogging, become a dab hand at it all. The journey begins here, I'm sure we shall all grow from this and develop as individuals, and along the way, HAVE FUN!

Looking at a few blogs, there is a variety of ages and aspirations, I have even noticed some ex-students/friends from my college on here- HOLLA! Most of you seem to be very keen on the teaching route, some of you have even embarked on a teaching role already, great stuff.

So who am I and what do I do?

I guess you brand me as an artist. I'm a professional dancer, I completed 3 years training at a vocational college, gaining a level 6 diploma in dance in 2012. I, like many, hauled through the crowds and crowds of auditionees to present myself infront of potential employers in the dance world. After what felt like a historic journey, I eventually landed myself a cruise contract as a dancer with the renowned Carnival Cruise Lines. I can honestly say that those 7 months were life changing for me, returning home this Sept 2013, I was a new person.

So I don't wish to bore you on my first entry, please feel free to help me in any/all ways possible.

Thanks for taking the time from your busy lives to read this and hope to hear from you all soon.

Peace and Love
